I grew up knowing that my dad was an intelligent man, but one exchange me realize just how comprehensive his knowledge was when thinking back on it as an adult. I must have been 10 or 12 at the time. We were sitting in the car at the beach, looking at the coastline and listening to Car Talk on the radio. I asked, "How how do radios have all these stations?" I was expecting an explanation about radio towers or something of the like. But, he jumped into explaining the intricacies of how analog radios function, going over each integral part that makes it work. He spent several minutes describing the mechanics of the tiny metal plates that are millimeters apart, and how they allow the tuner to receive signal. I still don't really understand it, but he sure did. His work didn't require him to have this knowledge, he simply found it interesting. This, among essentially everything I ever asked about, he had a detailed explanation for. If he didn't know, which was rare, he would say, "Hm... I'm not sure, so let's look it up!" because he was *always* hungry for knowledge.
