Meeting Aradhika

O n the first day of college at the University of Maryland on September 6th, 1988, something stirred within Eric — a spontaneous urge, a whispering of destiny. Instead of waiting at his usual bus stop, Eric chose to walk a block farther, driven by a curiosity he couldn’t quite understand.

At the bus stop just ahead, he saw her. A striking young woman with dark, curly hair kept in a thick braid.

Eric and Aradhika spent the bus ride exchanging laughter and stories. She had just arrived from Delhi, a recent transplant navigating the newness of American life, and as they reached the university, Eric found himself captivated by her anecdotes, the warmth of her smile, and the wisdom in her gaze. It seemed serendipitous that this encounter happened on the very day he had been delving into the intricacies of Indian culture in his spare time.

Over the course of the ensuing months, their connection blossomed into a beautiful relationship, filled with late-night study sessions, weekend explorations of the city, and shared meals that blended the best of both their worlds. With each conversation, Eric fell deeper into Aradhika's world; he learned of the vibrant festivals in India, the ceremonies that marked life’s milestones, and even the bittersweet stories of her family back in Delhi.

After nearly two years of love, laughter, and cultural exchanges, Eric asked Aradhika to marry him.

Their wedding was a melding of traditions and cultures—an intimate court ceremony in Maryland followed by an extravagant celebration in Aradhika’s hometown, Delhi, where the air was thick with spices, music, and laughter. Both families had their reservations about this brave union across cultures, but as they watched Eric clad in a traditional sherwani and Aradhika in a radiant lehenga, their love became undeniable.

Settling into their first apartment in Greenbelt, Maryland, Eric and Aradhika painted their world with as much vivacity as the sunsets that washed through their windows. Soon, their little family grew with the birth of their son, Alexander Rajender Webber — his name a testament to heritage, honoring Aradhika’s father.

In the years ahead, Eric’s enthusiasm for both programming and culture would lay the framework of not only a successful career but also a life filled with love and adventure, forever grounded by the roots of his formative years that began that fateful morning at the bus stop—a journey that would shape the man he was destined to become.
